Code Update Outline

1. PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

This course is designed to comply with the requirements of the Electrical Administrative Act 217 of 1956. Individuals attending this course will be able to describe the changes to the 2017 National Electrical Code Book and 2017 Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8.

2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will review the latest code (2017) and learn of the updated changes. Topics include the 2014 National Electrical Code and the 2017 Electrical Code Rules Part 8.

A. Articles 90 through 225 4 Hours

B. Articles 230 through 400 4 Hours

C. Articles 402 through 600 3 Hours

D. Articles 604 through 840 3 Hours

E. Michigan Part 8 Electrical Code Rules & General Code overview and Review questions 2 Hours

3. GRADING CRITERIA

Students must attend all of the scheduled classes to receive a valid Certificate of Completion per State of Michigan guidelines.

5. PREREQUISITES

Students should possess a working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, and the Electrical Code Rules Part 8. Attendees should also hold a current Journeymen, Master, Fire Alarm Specialty Technician, or Sign Specialists license issued through the State of Michigan.

Exam Prep Course Outline

The Journey examination covers entry-level knowledge of the electrical industry as outlined in all categories listed below.

The Master examination covers additional knowledge required to plan and supervise electrical installations as outlined in all categories listed below.

1. Grounding and Bonding

Determination of system and circuit grounding requirements, methods and location of grounding connections. Choosing proper size grounding conductors, bonding of enclosures, equipment and interior metal piping systems.

2. Branch Circuits, Wire Connections and Devices

Knowledge of circuit classifications, ratings, design and use requirements. Knowledge and calculation of branch circuit loads. Application of code rules covering electrical outlets and devices, including wiring connectors and methods.

3. Conductors

Determination ampacity, type of insulation, usage requirements, methods of installation, protection, support and termination. Includes calculation of voltage drop and deration.

4. General Knowledge of Electrical Trade

Terminology and practical calculations such as power factor, voltage and current ratings of equipment.

5. Motors and Control of Motors and Equipment

Knowledge of code rules governing installation of motors and controls. Includes calculations for motor feeder and branch circuits, short circuit, ground fault, and overload protection, and disconnecting means. Knowledge of all control circuits and motor type application and usage.

6. Services and Feeders

Knowledge of code rules covering services. Calculation of electrical loads and determination of proper size, rating and type of service and feeder conductors.

7. General Use Equipment

Knowledge of code rules covering appliances, heating and air conditioning equipment, generators, transformers, etc.

8. Overcurrent Protection

Knowledge or application of fuses, circuit breakers and all types of protective devices for conductors and equipment. Includes rules on taps and splices.

9. Raceways

Knowledge of all types of raceways and their uses. Determining proper size, conductor fill, support and methods of installation.

10. Special Occupancies and Equipment

Knowledge of code rules as they apply to hazardous locations, health care facilities, places of assembly, etc. Includes code rules on signs, welders, industrial machinery, swimming pools, etc.

11. Boxes, Cabinets, Panelboards, Non-Raceway Enclosures

Application of proper type, use and support of boxes and cabinets, etc. Includes calculation of proper size and rating.

12. Low Voltage Circuits and Equipment

Knowledge of circuits and equipment characterized by usage and electrical power limitations, which differentiate them from electric light and power circuits. Includes remote-control, signaling, and power limited circuits.

13. Lighting and Lamps

Knowledge of all types and applications of lighting fixtures, ratings, requirements for occupancies, special provisions, clearances, etc. Includes load calculations for lighting.

14. State Laws, Rules and Code Amendments

Knowledge of Skilled Trades Regulation Act 407 of 2016) and the State Electrical Code (2017 National Electrical Code and Part 8, Michigan amendments).

High Pressure Operator Refresher Course:

Have you taken a course to prepare you for a High-Pressure Boiler Operator Examination but never took the exam to get licensed? Hours 1-8: Boiler History/Industry; Boiler Purpose; Types and Classifications.

Hours 9-16: Safety; auxiliaries and accessories

Hours 17-24: Boiler start-up; boiler operation; boiler shut-down and boiler inspection

Hours 25-32: Boiler testing; boiler inspection and examination

3rd Class Stationary Engineer Refresher Course:

Are you a Boiler Operator with years of experience that never took the next step to upgrade your professional license? Have you just completed your time in license grade and are ready for the next step up from the HPBO but do not have the time to sit through another year long course to prepare? Either way our 3rd Class Stationary Engineer Refresher Course is specifically designed for those looking to upgrade their knowledge of Stationary Engineering from a plant operator to an entry level engineer. This course goes beyond traditional operator duties and responsibilities and discusses plant operations beyond the boiler room.

Hours 1-8: HPBO Refresher

Hours 9-16: Water & Steam; Plant Operation; Feed Water Testing

Hours 17-24: Combustion and Draft basics; Plant Electricity; Turbine Basics

Hours 25-32: Testing and Examination

1st/2nd Class Stationary Engineer Refresher Course:

Did you miss out on a promotion because you do not have that higher license? Are you ready for boiler plant leadership and supervision? If so, then our 1st/2nd Class Stationary Engineer Refresher Course is designed with you in mind. This 40-hour course will prepare you for the final stage of this journey. It is intense and requires much of the participants as the 1st/2nd Class Engineer responsibilities will do so on the job in the plant.

This course takes a very non-traditional approach to its instruction delivery utilizing the time-tested Socratic Method to provide an inclusive learning environment for all participants.

Hours 1-8: Power Plant Operation Theory and Reliability

Hours 9-16: Water and Steam Theory and Quality

Hours 17-24: Plant Electricity, Turbines, Generators, and Power Distribution

Hours 25-32: Plant Start-Up/Shut down; lay-up and safety

Hours 33-40: License Examination Prep

3rd Class Refrigeration Refresher Course:

During this refresher we cover the essentials to reinforce your studies and provide clarity for all of the topics you can expect to see on an exam but more importantly will encounter on the job in the plant.

Hours 1-8: Refrigeration Theory/Industry; Refrigeration Purpose; Types and Classifications.

Hours 9-16: Safety; auxiliaries and accessories

The High Pressure Boiler Operator License Exam Preparation Course consists of Boiler appliances and auxiliaries; feed-water pumps, fusible plugs, low water alarms, water column, gage glass, tri-cocks, types of valves, pressure regulator, steam gauge, safety valves, low water and over pressure procedure, post of duty, Low water cutoff, automatic combustion controls, preparation of boilers for inspection, starting and shutting down a boiler’ smoke control, flame sensitive devices, fuels, fuel burning equipment, injector, venting of boiler and furnace, feed-water regulators, steam header and blow-off, valve arrangements and operation, soot blowers, and injectors.

Participants will learn all subject basics and master the core competencies required to successfully pass a Boiler Operator license examination.

This is a two-day course that is designed to cover the required material for the State of Michigan Mechanical Contractors Examination.
