BPI Infiltration and Duct Leakage (IDL) Field Exam

 

The BPI Infiltration and Duct Leakage (IDL) Field Exam validates a candidate’s ability to perform diagnostic testing related to building air leakage and duct system performance. Candidates are evaluated on their ability to properly set up and operate blower doors and duct leakage testing equipment, collect accurate data, follow industry testing procedures, and interpret results.

 

The IDL certification is ideal for energy auditors, HVAC professionals, weatherization technicians, home performance contractors, and utility program staff who conduct air leakage and duct leakage testing as part of residential energy assessments and HVAC system evaluations.

 

The field examination focuses on:

Blower door setup and operation

Building air leakage testing

Duct leakage testing procedures

Pressure diagnostics

Testing Options

 

The IDL Field Exam may be completed either remotely or in person.

For in-person testing, HVAC U will provide all required testing equipment and diagnostic tools needed to complete the examination.

 

For remote testing, candidates must have:

Access to the required blower door and duct leakage testing equipment

A reliable internet connection

A computer for the testing session

A smartphone or tablet to provide a live view of testing activities during the exam

Candidates testing remotely should review the applicable testing requirements and ensure the test site is suitable for conducting all required diagnostic procedures.
